Description
Build conditional LearnDash workflows without repeating routine enrollment and email tasks. Smart Rules for LearnDash connects a learner event to an audience, a set of conditions and ordered actions you control.
For example, when a learner completes a selected quiz and meets your score condition, enroll them in a follow-on course and send a useful email. Start with a draft, test with a controlled learner and inspect the execution log before enabling a live workflow.
Included in the free plugin
- React to course, lesson, topic and quiz completion, and course-access changes.
- Enroll a learner in a course, remove course enrollment or email the learner.
- Check roles, users, groups, course access, completion, progress, quiz scores, pass status, metadata and dates.
- Narrow the audience with searchable selections for users, courses, groups, lessons, topics and quizzes.
- Combine conditions, order actions and assign rule priorities.
- Search and filter rules; enable or pause workflows; review execution logs.
- Configure log retention and choose whether uninstalling removes stored data.
- Extend documented catalogs and lifecycle hooks as a developer.
All bundled features work without a WooCrafters license. LearnDash LMS is required and is a separate commercial product.
Watch the walkthrough
The walkthrough covers the Rules product family. Some screens may show the separately installed Pro add-on; the Free and Pro capabilities are listed below.
Optional Smart Rules for LearnDash Pro add-on
The separately distributed Pro add-on adds user registration, sign-in, group-change and scheduled events; group and safe learner-role changes; HTTPS webhooks; registered developer actions; team notifications; and dry-run simulations. The free base must remain active alongside Pro. A valid WooCrafters license is required to execute Pro actions. Paid execution implementations are not bundled in this free plugin.

Documentation and support
This is an independent WooCrafters integration. It is not an official LearnDash product and is not affiliated with or endorsed by LearnDash. LearnDash cannot be installed from the public WordPress plugin directory.
External services
The free rules engine makes no automatic license requests without a saved key.
Optional WooCrafters license service: activating a key sends the license key, site URL, product identifier/name, and WordPress environment to https://woocrafters.com/ using HTTPS. Checks run twice daily while a key is saved. Deactivation sends the same information to release the activation. License status, expiry, limited entitlement metadata, and the key are stored in a non-autoloaded WordPress option. The key is not rendered into the admin page. Service provider: WooCrafters (https://woocrafters.com/). Terms: https://woocrafters.com/terms-conditions/ . Privacy policy: https://woocrafters.com/privacy-policy/ . The service also receives normal HTTP connection information, such as the requesting IP address and WordPress HTTP user agent. Activation is optional and is initiated by an administrator; no license is needed for free automations.
Pro add-on webhook actions (not included in this package): only after an administrator creates and activates a webhook rule, a matching event sends the learner ID, event name, and limited course/quiz/group/lesson/topic context to the public HTTPS URL selected by that administrator. Redirects and private/local network URLs are rejected. Administrators are responsible for choosing an authorized endpoint and informing learners. No third-party webhook service is bundled.
Email actions use WordPress wp_mail and the site’s configured mail transport. They send the configured subject and message to the matching learner. Logs can contain learner IDs and action results. Logs are removed automatically after the configured retention period (default 30 days).
Support
For setup documentation, see the Rules setup guide. For product support, visit https://woocrafters.com/contact/ or email support@woocrafters.com. Include the plugin, WordPress, PHP and LearnDash versions and a description of the problem. Do not send license keys, passwords or learner records in public support requests.
Installation
For an existing rules-for-learndash installation, deactivate the old free plugin before activating the renamed wc-crafters-rules-for-learndash package. Do not delete the old plugin with Remove data on uninstall enabled. Both names use the same existing rules and settings. Use the Pro companion package with its updated dependency header when switching to the renamed directory.
- Install and activate LearnDash LMS.
- Upload the wc-crafters-rules-for-learndash directory and activate Smart Rules for LearnDash.
- Open Smart Rules for LearnDash Rules Create rule.
- Configure a draft and review its event, audience and actions. Test with a controlled learner on a staging site.
- With licensed Pro, optionally enable Dry-run before testing. Turn it off before activating live actions. Inspect Activity after a matching event.
FAQ
-
Can I target one quiz, lesson, or course?
-
Yes. Choose the matching completion event, then select the item by title under Quizzes, Lessons, or Courses. Select multiple items to match any one of those items. Leave All selected for no restriction. Every restricted category must match; missing item context does not match. Action targets are selected individually by title; add ordered action rows to affect several courses or groups.
-
Is a license required?
-
No license is needed for this free package. Install and activate the separate Pro add-on AND activate a valid license to execute its paid actions. A LearnDash license is separate from a WooCrafters Pro license.
-
Can I execute arbitrary PHP or WordPress hooks?
-
No. Pro developers can register named actions; developers can extend events through documented filters. This prevents administrators from accidentally dispatching unrelated security-sensitive hooks.
-
Do scheduled rules run only once?
-
Scheduled rules require licensed Pro and repeat for matching users. Up to 200 users are evaluated per batch, approximately every 15 minutes depending on WordPress cron traffic. Use conditions to prevent repeated actions. Course/quiz scopes require an event carrying that context and therefore do not match scheduled evaluations.
-
The engine stops processing and displays an administrator dependency notice. Rules and settings remain stored.
-
What happens on deletion?
-
Rules, logs, and settings are retained by default. Enable Remove data on uninstall to delete the current site’s plugin tables and options when deleting the plugin. Deactivation alone keeps data.
-
Does this support network activation?
-
Use per-site activation. Network-wide activation is intentionally rejected; each site’s rules and settings are independent.
