Description
Alt Text Generator AI writes descriptive, SEO-friendly alt text for your WordPress images automatically, so every image on your site is accessible and discoverable without typing a single description by hand.
Over 50% of websites are still missing alt text on their images, and ADA-related web accessibility lawsuits have topped 3,100 filings in a single year. Missing alt text is more than a lost SEO opportunity in Google Image Search. It is a real accessibility and legal risk.

Four ways to generate alt text
- Automatically on upload – Alt text is written the moment an image finishes uploading to the Media Library. On by default, and you can switch it off in Settings.
- One click in the Media Library – Open any image and click Generate Alt Text to create or regenerate its alternative text.
- In bulk – The Bulk Alt Text page scans your whole library and sorts images into Empty, Short (under 20 characters) and All tabs. Search by ID or text, generate for selected images, or generate for everything in the tab.
- From the command line – Use
wp alt-text generateto process an entire library with WP-CLI.
Why Alt Text Matters
- SEO – Google uses alt text to understand and rank your images in Image Search, which can drive organic traffic to product pages, blog posts and galleries.
- Accessibility – Alt text lets screen readers describe your images to visually impaired visitors, a core requirement of WCAG 2.1/2.2.
- Legal compliance – ADA and Section 508 website-accessibility lawsuits are rising every year. Properly described images reduce that exposure.
Key Features
- Automatic generation on upload – Alt text is automatically added to every image uploaded on the site.
- One-click generation in the Media Library – A Generate Alt Text button sits right under the Alternative Text field in the image details window.

Using WP-CLI
The plugin registers an alt-text command with two subcommands. Run them from your WordPress root folder (the one containing wp-config.php). The plugin must be active, with your API key and domain saved in AltTextGenerator Settings.
Commands
wp alt-text status– Shows API status, remaining credits, website domain, language and how many images are missing alt text.wp alt-text generate– Generates alt text for every image that has none.
Options for wp alt-text generate
--short– Also regenerate images whose alt text is shorter than 20 characters.--all– Regenerate every image in the library, even if it already has alt text.--ids=<ids>– Only process these attachment IDs (comma-separated).--force– With--ids, regenerate even if the image already has alt text.--limit=<number>– Process at most this many images in one run.--dry-run– List the images that would be processed without calling the API or using credits.
Examples
# Check API status, credits, and how many images are missing alt text
wp alt-text status
# Generate alt text for every image that's missing it
wp alt-text generate
# Also regenerate images whose alt text is too short
wp alt-text generate --short
# Regenerate every image in the library
wp alt-text generate --all
# Regenerate specific attachments, even if they already have alt text
wp alt-text generate --ids=12,34,56 --force
# Preview what would be processed, without using any credits

FAQ
-
What is alt text, and why does my WordPress site need it?
-
Alt text (alternative text) is a short description attached to an image. Screen readers read it aloud to visually impaired visitors, and search engines use it to understand what an image shows. Without it, images are invisible to assistive technology and to Google Image Search, and your site risks falling short of WCAG/ADA accessibility requirements.
-
Does this plugin generate alt text automatically, or do I have to trigger it?
-
Both. Alt text is generated automatically when you upload a new image (you can turn this off in Settings). For existing images, use the Bulk Alt Text page to generate descriptions for everything that is missing one, or open any image and click Generate Alt Text.
-
Can I edit the alt text the AI generates?
-
Yes. Every alt text is editable. You can edit it at any time from the Media Library or from the Bulk Alt Text page.
-
What counts as “short” alt text on the Bulk page?
-
Alt text under 20 characters, for example a bare file name or a single word. The Short tab lets you find and regenerate these in bulk.
-
Can I also generate other image details?
-
Yes, you can generate the image title, caption, and description using the generated alt text. Check the options on the Settings page.
-
How many languages does it support?
-
131 languages, from major world languages to regional ones. Pick your language in Settings.
-
Does it work with WooCommerce?
-
Yes. Product and gallery images are processed the same way as any other image, which helps your product pages rank in image search.
-
What image formats are supported?
-
JPEG, JPG, PNG, SVG, GIF, WEBP and AVIF.
-
Do I need a paid plan to try it?
-
No. New accounts get 2 free credits to test the plugin on real images. When you need more, credit packs are one-time purchases that never expire. See the pricing page.
-
Can I generate alt text from the command line?
-
Yes. The plugin registers a
wp alt-textWP-CLI command, includingwp alt-text generateandwp alt-text status. See “Using WP-CLI” above for examples.

Changelog
2.4.6
Added AVIF support: AVIF images are converted to JPEG on your server before alt text is generated (requires GD or Imagick with AVIF support on your host). Error responses from the API (for example an invalid key or no credits) are no longer saved as alt text. The Bulk Alt Text tab counts now include every image type.
2.4.5
New WP-CLI options: wp alt-text generate --short also regenerates images with short alt text, and --all regenerates every image in the library.
2.4.4
The Generate Alt Text button now appears right away when you open an image from the Bulk Alt Text page, with no need to click away and back.
2.4.3
In the Media Library image window, the Generate Alt Text button now sits below the Alternative Text description and lines up with the field.
2.4.2
Fixed row dividers in the Bulk Alt Text table so action buttons stay aligned.
2.2.2 – 2.4.1
- New Settings page with welcome banner, credits and API status cards, a “Need more credits?” card and a Resources card with the setup tutorial and video.
- New brand colors across Settings, Bulk Alt Text and the Media Library button.
- New sidebar menu with Settings and Bulk Alt Text submenus and a new icon.
- Credits now refresh automatically, including when you return to the tab.
- Bulk Alt Text lists update immediately after an image is generated, so tabs no longer show stale data.
- Generation on upload now only runs for images, so other file types never use a credit.
- Smaller buttons and a cleaner language dropdown.
2.2.1
Fixed the Bulk Alt Text page’s row action buttons being hidden until hover (caused by a CSS class name that collided with a WordPress core admin style). Made the admin menu icon’s background transparent and fixed its vertical centering. Standardized button heights across Settings and Bulk Alt Text so they’re all the same size. Increased the banner’s border contrast.
2.2.0
Expanded language support from 35+ to 131+ languages. Added an “Automatically generate on upload” setting (on by default) so automatic generation can be turned off. Redesigned the Bulk Alt Text page with Empty/Short/All tabs, search, and a sortable table. Fixed a sidebar icon sizing issue and a stale-cache issue that could leave the Bulk page stuck on “Loading images…”. Various styling fixes (button sizing, language dropdown).
2.1.0
Added WP-CLI support: wp alt-text generate (with --ids, --force, --limit, --dry-run) and wp alt-text status.
